Chapter 9
Yin and Yang energy balance
How do I wake up my Braveheart?
I’m about to give you some unusual advice: take a deep breath and do nothing. No, I’m not about to recommend that you meditate spontaneously — although that would work too. I am going to ask you to try to move your attention away from your head and 30 centimetres down towards your heart. Now, you may not have located it for a while, so here’s a diagram to help you find it.
Put your hands on your body and focus on the red spot.
Remember her?
How often do you listen to her over the verbally incontinent b**ch in your head? I’m going to guess the answer to that question is, ‘Um, not often enough’. And if that’s the case, you’re not alone: society has taught us all from a very young age to trust our heads over our hearts.
But what if society is wrong?
What if our hearts are where it’s at?
Let me explain: everything is made up of yin and yang — even the cup of coffee you love to drink. It’s hot like yang and dark like yin. Remove either one of those aspects and it’s a pretty shit cup of coffee.
Now, when I say ‘dark’ I’m not talking ‘Darth Vader welcome to the dark side’ dark. I’m talking ‘deep mysteries of the heart’ dark. The soft, velvety kind. The kind of dark you want to delve into: you know the treasure is hidden in there, but you’re scared. That kind of dark. But even the fact that your initial reaction to something yin would be distrust says a lot about the way society has moulded us. We have been brought up to worship the yang and fear the yin. And therein lies our problem.
Because yang is active, bright, hard, restless, dominant, hot and head-based. Everything the business world demands of us. Yin, on the other hand, is deep, dark, cloudy, soft, flowing, emotional, mysterious and heart-based. Everything being a human requires. Yang is often associated with masculinity and yin with femininity, but that is not always the case.
Now, neither of these is better than the other; in fact, both are needed to create balance — remember the coffee? The issue is simply that (as I just pointed out) we live in a world that is in love with yang and has an inherent distrust and is dismissive of yin. Which is a pity, really, because that fear keeps you cut off from the source of your greatest power: everything you need most can be found by tapping into the wisdom of the heart.
So back to the exercise — are you doing it?
Focusing on your heart?
Does it feel stupid to you? Scary even?
Please do it anyway.
There. You’ve just taken your first courageous step towards developing a Braveheart. One that has the courage to listen, to sit in stillness and feel whatever is going on for you in that moment and to take the journey to heal it; and one that isn’t afraid to show its vulnerability to deepen its connection with others.
